The Salt Lake formed by meteorological waters seeping underground, dissolving previously formed salt deposits, and transporting it to the surface along tectonic lines.
As Türkiye's second largest lake by surface area, Lake Tuz is situated in the deepest part of a large tectonic depression embedded between the surrounding plateaus. This depression was formed by tectonic movements during the Neogene period. The depression in which Lake Tuz is located is surrounded by faults to the east, west, and south. During the Quaternary period, under less rainy climatic conditions, the lake's surface area decreased. Over time, the lake continued to shrink, reaching its present-day size.
